Kirkwood High School
Class of 1959
Mini Reunion September 26-28, 2003

First for those classmates who could have come and didn't you missed a great weekend.  Don't miss the next one!

Lots of photos are linked to at the end.

People started gathering from Oklahoma, Louisiana, Texas and Florida on Friday, Sep 26. Eventually Del and Pat Campbell hosted Kendall Hagan (Waggoner), Don and Gloria Steele, Nancy (Clem) and Jerry Pyatt, and Steve and Yvonne Coester at their beautiful hillside home in Dripping Springs, Texas. Del and Pat have a wonderful patio deck overlooking the Texas Hill Country, a swimming pool, and a professional grade tennis court with basketball court. It is a full service "resort".

I think everyone entered the weekend with a little trepidation since most of us had not laid eyes on the others since graduation and some barely knew each other even back at KHS. But it's funny how that link from our youth erases all barriers and we all reconnected immediately.

Don and Gloria Steele came rolling in from New Orleans with thirty pounds of fresh gulf shrimp along with a monstrous pot and cooker. While the rest of us drank and talked, Don boiled shrimp.  We all gorged ourselves for hours and could not eat the giant main course that Pat had prepared of beef brisket which had to wait another day.

The days were filled with sitting on the deck talking about old and new times. Grandchildren and aches and pains seemed to be the main topics.  We hiked around the Campbell's many acres of Cedar trees. And we played quite a bit of tennis and shot some hoops.  There were some stiff bodies each morning.  In tennis the order of proficiency was:  Del in the stratosphere,  Nancy and Pat both excellent players, Don good but gimpy, and then Steve who hadn't played for (how many Del?)  twenty-eight years. Steve used that excuse often! Del covered the whole court for Don and Steve and fought off the fine girls' team. Everyone had a big grin on their faces the whole time and kept the spectators in stitches.

Kendall could only stay one day and we were all so happy that she came at all. She is one class act and lots of fun.  Jerry Pyatt gave up a hunting trip for us and he and Nancy were a joy to be around.  Same for Don and Gloria and afterall Don did bring the shrimp.  Yvonne C. always adds life to any gathering and well, Steve is Steve and generally lowers the level of decorum with his "cute" jokes.  Pat and Del were gracious hosts except on the tennis court where they used homecourt advantage to humiliate the rest of us.

It was a great idea, Del and I hope others will do similar regional homecomings in their areas. It was a blast for all of us lucky enough to attend. thanks Pat for putting up with us.
