Yvonne and Steve made a quick decision to go skiing at Salt Lake City after seeing that the mountains had about three feet of fresh snow in the past week. We flew a long day via San Francisco on Dec 10, 2001, met a Flight Attendant named Beth that knew Dean. she gave us a bottle of champagne. We began skiing on the 11th. We had our room at the Best Western Executive Inn in Sandy. The UTA ski bus was just across the street so we decided to leave the driving to the professionals as the roads were pretty icy. I figure my Avis car cost me about $5 per mile for the little we actually used it!
We skied Alta, Solitude, and Brighton the first three days and had really enjoyable days. The snow base was incredible with no nasty rocks showing through. Yvonne even did her first Expert (Black Diamond) run down Serenity at Solitude in three inches of light powder. I also did Challenger which is the most difficult "reasonable" run at Solitude. The fourth day a big storm came in and it was pretty miserable with 40 mph winds and blowing snow. Yvonne spent most of the afternoon in the lodge after a fall hurt her leg a little. I actually enjoyed the foul weather skiing. That day it snowed eleven inches in the mountains so for our final day we had some great powder skiing. This was one of Yvonne's few powder experiences and after a little timidity, she started digging in her edges and did fine in the deep stuff. I skied the black ungroomed Aspen Glow which must have had eighteen inches of powder on it. We both had a perfect final ski day.
One evening we rode the TRAX train downtown to see the lights at Temple Square. It is an incredible display, and the first time we had visited the Morman Temple. Our train got delayed and they transferred us to buses because somebody jumped in front of the train committing suicide.
For dinners we had Mexican one night and sixteen ounce prime rib at Lone Star Steakhouse twice (which we split). Even ate spagetti one night.
The flight out and back were great with us getting first class on three of the four legs. We are very spoiled.
